Optimizing Network Access Security

Despite growing cloud adoption, Statista estimates the Virtual Private Network (VPN) market will continue to grow from $18B USD in 2017 to $36B USD in 2022. Statista states that more and more corporate and enterprise businesses will continue to invest in VPN network security as telecommuting and working from home continues to increase. In the past five years, Fundera has reported that working from home has increased by 40%. The study also claims that 2 out of 3 managers offer the flexibility to telecommute from home, and telecommuting employees have grown 115% since 2005. This industry data shows that remote access connectivity will continue to be an essential part of a hybrid IT world.

The Challenge

Digital transformation demands the need for faster, reliable and more secure network connectivity. More and more devices and now things require secure connectivity with the ability to protect the data that are shared. In today’s market, technology runs in silos to address different requirements for performance, reliability and security. An integrated solution is required to make implementations less complicated and easier to scale, manage and maintain.

The Solution

To help address this problem, Pulse Secure integrated two products to provide a holistic solution. The combined solution is Pulse Secure’s virtual Traffic Manager (vTM) along with Pulse Secure’s Optimal Gateway Selection feature (OGS).

OGS offers the ability to dynamically route client traffic using one unique URL and multiple load balancing algorithms that are utilized based on business requirements. With Pulse virtual Traffic Manager, OGS offers Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) which controls traffic based on:

Traffic Load — Distributes traffic based on the current load of the Connect Secure Gateways using SOAP API to determine the existing load.

Geographic — Dispatches traffic based on the location of the client. Pulse Traffic Manager has a geo-location database that helps query the closest possible gateway.

Adaptive — Distributes traffic based on the combination of load and geographic location.

Round-robin — Distributes sessions equally across all Pulse Connect Secure gateways.

Weighted Random — Distributes traffic based on administrator-defined weights assigned to Pulse Connect Secure Gateways. This is commonly implemented when disparate gateways are deployed across the network.

Active/Backup — No load balancing is offered in this algorithm.  Traffic is directed to available gateways operating in a high-availability redundancy scheme.

Regardless of what size your enterprise business is, Pulse Secure can deploy Optimal Gateway Selection in any Secure Access environment. Pulse Secure solutions leverage your existing security infrastructure, ensuring that every client experience has the best access performance with the ability to access the network using a single URL.
